After years, and years of delays and pushbacks, the big-screen adaptation of the popular video game Uncharted has arrived, and the first reactions are now in. Starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as the central pair of aspiring adventurers Nathan Drake and as Victor “Sully” Sullivan, the Uncharted movie has been in development since all the way back in 208. So, was it all worth the wait?
The consensus among many who have been lucky enough to see Uncharted had, at the very least, a jolly good time at the theater — mainly when it came to the action sequences and impressive stunts on display.
Based on one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, Uncharted tells the story of Nathan Drake as he embarks on his first adventure alongside rival-turned-partner Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as the quick-witted, wise-cracking Sully, Uncharted will introduce audiences to the duo of explorers as Nathan Drake becomes the treasure hunter that video game fans all know and love. The plot will see the pair searching for “the greatest treasure never found” while also tracking clues that may lead to Drake’s long-lost brother.
Uncharted director Ruben Fleischer set out with the hopes to appeal to both fans of the video game and newcomers sitting down to watch the adventures of Nate and Sully for the first time. From the sounds of it, that admittedly very difficult balance was not quite achieved, with fans of the game advised to watch the movie through objective eyes.
Of course, with the ups must come the downs, and the reactions to Uncharted have not all been quite as positive. Thankfully, even though not everything about the video game adaptation works, it is another star-making vehicle for Tom Holland.
Things get a little worse with this reaction however, who describes Uncharted as “bland.” There have been some concerns throughout production that both Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg have been miscast, and it seems these judgments may have been right. According to some fans, at least…
For others, while it may take a while, Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg do gradually grow into their respective roles. Ultimately, Uncharted emerges as a middling-but-enjoyable action-adventure blockbuster.
But we shall end things on a higher note, with this reaction calling Uncharted a “big-dumb-fun” video game movie. Really, should we have expected anything else?
Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Zombieland: Double Tap) from a screenplay by Rafe Lee Judkins, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway, Uncharted stars Sophia Ali as Chloe Frazer, a fellow fortune hunter and associate of Sully’s and Nate’s love interest; Tati Gabrielle as Braddock, a mercenary working against Nate and Sully; Pilou Asbæk and YouTube personality ElrubiusOMG in undisclosed roles; and Antonio Banderas as Moncada, a ruthless treasure hunter and the film’s antagonist alongside Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as the bickering central duo.
Uncharted is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on February 18, by Sony Pictures Releasing.
